Remember when I was doing a happy dance, because school was starting and mama was gaining some freedom? Bwahahaha! Mama got the sports and practice schedules. Between sports, dance, church activities, and homework, we have overlapping practices every day of the week except Mondays. Oh wait, scratch that, games have been added on Mondays.
The funny thing is I was talking to a neighbor about this very thing the other day. Life is busy, so how do we make it easier? Because let’s be honest, there are days when I just want to say to heck with it all, and just take a nap. Here are my family’s ways to make a busy week successful and less stressful.
Write Everything Down
I mean it, everything. We have a family planner where all practices, games, activities, projects, etc, get posted. If it’s not in the planner, then it’s not happening. I have a separate electronic version for my husband and I. I had to laugh, because my husband called me yesterday as he was taking our daughter to her softball game. No one was at the school. I told him he was at the wrong location and asked him if he checked the planner. He did not. Dude, check the planner. It’s all written down.
Easy and Quick Dinners
That was one thing my neighbor and I were lamenting. Dinner! Every night. By the time the kids get home from school, we’re in the kitchen making dinner, trying to feed it to them, and then cleanup…it’s just crazy. I told her about Kidfresh Frozen Meals. They are convenient, simple to prepare, and I found them at my local Target. I always worry about healthy meals for my kids, because hey, cold cereal is quick, but I want something better. Kidfresh meals are made with up to ½ cup of hidden veggies in every meal. I add a couple of quick sides, and bam! Dinner done.
Kidfresh meals come in different varieties, and they are all foods my kids already love. So if you add some extra veggies in, that’s a mom win for me. My kids’ favorite is the Kidfresh Wagon Wheels Mac + Cheese with the Kidfresh Easy Cheesy Ravioli coming in a close 2nd. With a family of 7, I also need affordable. At my retailer, they were less than $3.
You know what that means? Mama’s stockpiling and filling the freezer! They’re also great for when I call in my parents or a neighbor for reinforcements. Then they don’t have to worry about cooking an elaborate dinner. Head to Target and find them in the freezer section where the Kid Faves are located.
Have a Designated Area for Equipment
In our house, we designate one room (our mudroom/laundry room) for all the sports equipment. We have hooks for sports bags where anything can fit should be in the bag. All extra shoes or balls or uniforms are placed in bins inside the room. Unless you are actually using said equipment, it should be in the room. That way when it’s game time or practice time, I don’t have children running around the house telling me they can’t find something. When you step in the house after a game or practice, all bags, shoes, etc, go straight to the room. Not by the front door, not in the hallway, not in my kitchen.
Ask for Help
Always have a Plan B. Sometimes games and practices overlap, and I have to be in 3 places at once and can’t. Other times my husband is stuck at work. Then things just happen. I’m lucky to have family in town that I can call if I’m in a bind. However, I also have friends and neighbors. They’re closer.
We’re new in this area, so I have to branch out and talk to other parents on the team who live near us. My daughter’s volleyball coach takes her to practice all the time. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and swap rides. My stress level always drops when I don’t have to shuttle every child to every location.
Our lives are still busy, but these tips definitely help our week go more smoothly. I’m keeping my cool, and I’ve got my head in the game. We’ve got this, parents. We’ve got this.
