Amsterdam Parents Guide – Is it OK for Teens?

Wondering if Amsterdam is ok for tweens and teens? This film has a lot of star power, including Taylor Swift, which will make many teens want to watch. Although Amsterdam is relatively safe-ish for an R rated movie for teens aside from some bloody images, the whole plot is confusing and muddled. Here’s what parents need to know in this Amsterdam Parents Guide.

In 1933 three close friends find themselves at the center of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history. Two fixers of last resort – Dr. Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) and attorney Harold Woodman, Esq., (John David Washington) have offices in uptown New York in an enchanting period where it feels like something big is about to happen somehow. They have been through a lot, and they have the scars to prove it. These two outsiders are best friends and help anybody with any kind of trouble. They’re basically friend goals. However I don’t think they knew just what kind of adventure was about to await.

Is Amsterdam Appropriate for Kids Under 17?

You can expect to see some blood and gore, a few violent scenes, smoking, alcohol, pain medication use, and profanity used by some of the characters. To sum it up, Amsterdam is not kid-friendly for younger kids, but teens would probably be ok.

The question is whether teens will really be interested in the film. Taylor Swift’s appearance isn’t going to carry the movie for some. Amsterdam really tries hard, an “A” for effort. There is just too much going on to really appreciate any of it. The whole story is overcomplicated for a film about love and friendship.

Parents know their kids best, and if there’s still uncertainty whether a movie is appropriate for your kids, I recommend screening it first.
