As a busy mom of 5, I try hard to make time to run and to go to the gym. I need the motivation from fitness classes, plus they’re fun and essential for my sanity. However, I lack time. Here are 6 gym bag essentials that I always pack in my gym bag, because I don’t always have the time to shower right away. Sorry, Walmart shoppers. I may smell a bit.
Gym Bag Essentials for Her
Since I’m a woman and women have different hormones, I’m directing this gym bag essentials for women post to the ladies. However, guys feel free to use these tips, too. These are my workout bag essentials that I try to have waiting for me by the door calling me to use them and actually go to the gym. I love to run, and even with my best running advice, I sometimes forget that I love to run.
Water Bottle
A good reusable water bottle is a must for working out! It keeps you hydrated, you can refill when necessary, and it’s better for the environment. Plus the more you sweat, the more water you need, even though we all know we don’t sweat, we sparkle.
Hand and Face Wipes
One of my favorite beauty hacks is using wipes for pretty much everything. I sometimes go to the gym in the morning, afternoon, or evening. My schedule isn’t the same. So I use Johnson’s Hand & Face Wipes to wash my makeup off before I run. Having mascara run into your eyes while working out stings! They are gentle enough for your face.
On the flip side, when I’m done working out, I use the wipes to wash off all the sweat (ahem Sparkle), because my face turns salty. It’s like a quick little cat bath, because sometimes I have to pick up kids, run to Walmart or the grocery store, or other errands. And if you’re like me, you see everybody you know when you aren’t looking or smelling your best. The wipes help you with your workout glow and are such a time saver!
Small Towel
Some gyms provide towels, but others don’t. A towel is a gym bag essential. I just carry a small towel of my own to be on the safe side. Sweat running down your face and arms is not pleasant. Also if you’re using a yoga mat, then it makes them slippery. Trust me, I’ve been the victim of a sweaty yoga mat. I’ll usually drape the towel over the treadmill or exercise bike or keep it by my water bottle during a class.
Deodorant
I’m pretty much leaving this as self-explanatory. Do your best to absorb the smell before and after a workout. Deodorant is a gym bag necessity. Buy a travel sized one and throw it in.
Dry Shampoo/ Hat
I’m putting these in the same category, because some people are not hat people. I am. After (and during) a good run, I just throw on a hat or visor and call it good. I feel errand worthy afterwards. If you’re not a hat person, then grab some dry shampoo, spray it in your hair, brush it out, and bam. Your hair is not quite a soppy wet mess. You can also find travel sized Dry Shampoo at beauty stores like Ulta or even at Target and Walmart.
Snack
I need something to eat after I run or workout or else I’m hangry. Also, you should be eating protein afterwards to help your muscles recover. I’ll throw a protein bar or some almonds in my bag. My recovery drink of choice is chocolate milk, but I can’t always find that right away.
So no more excuses (though I could probably find some if I tried). Grab these gym bag essentials and get your sweat on.

Great tips Tania! I always bring my own towel to the gym - no brainer. While I'm sure they wash their towels I just can't stomach the thought of someone else using it before me. Gross!
