Are you ready to rumble? Wait, wrong battle. What exactly is a Lip Sync Battle you ask? Well it’s when you battle it out to the death to see who can perform the best lip sync to a song. Ok, maybe not the death, but pretty close. Really it’s all in good fun.
I call myself a lip sync battle champion, because my husband and I did win the championship belt at our church activity. We performed a little High School Musical action. Jazz squares and everything. They’re a real crowd pleaser.
I first started watching Lip Sync Battles on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He would have lip sync battles with some of his guests, and they were hilarious. Now there’s a television show where celebrities will compete against each other. Their battles are more elaborate complete with backup dancers, props, costumes, light shows, and even surprise celebrities. Now we’re nowhere near that level! We just do it to entertain ourselves.
I decided to start this tradition in my family as a way to have fun and spend time together. We all love music and dancing, but I also noticed my girls were hesitant at first. They were self-conscious. It’s intimidating to get up and make a fool out of yourself even in front of your family. It’s still hard for me.
But I wanted them to learn that our home is a safe place. We support each other. We clap. We cheer. We give positive feedback. We learn to laugh at ourselves and our ridiculousness.
When they were comfortable enough with that, it was easier for them to be a little braver with other things. They weren’t as self-conscious at school (not that they were performing lip sync battles), but confidence transfers in all life situations. I want them to be proud of who they are – silly, goofy, kind, shy, dorky, awesome, smart, clever. Whatever, as long as they are kind.
I believe the home is where we form our best selves. I want my kids to remember that their mom enjoyed them and just loved life.
When we did some family lips sync battles, our niece was staying with us and she wanted to join in the fun, too! So come join us! Here’s a sample of some our family’s lip sync battles. If you want to battle us, you know where to find me Let’s do it!
