Best Running Advice

Best running advice

It’s been awhile since I’ve participated in Tuesdays on the Run! I’ve missed it. The move and school have thrown off my training, but I’m back in it as I have Army Ten-Miler coming up next month. I also joined a gym to log some treadmill miles when I can’t make it outside. This week’s topic: your best running advice.

This topic reminded me of a post from Another Mother Runner. They asked all of us Role Mothers for our best running advice to inspire or to keep us moving.

My answer was: Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s your race and your pace. Make your own goals, and don’t worry about what others are doing. You are awesome, and don’t forget that.

A lot of the other Role Mothers had similar pieces of advice. Let you be you, run for you, breathe, relax, etc.

The point is running is a mental sport. Oh it’s physical, too, I know. But you can really get wrapped up in your head. Melissa, one of the other Role Mothers, said, ““Your mind will give out way before you body does.”

This is one of the reasons I like to run with friends. They keep me distracted from the voices inside my head. You know the ones that tell me my body hurts or that I want to stop or that I can’t go another mile. The ones that see other runners passing me or that don’t look nearly as tired as I am.

I’m not sure why I would rather let myself down than my friends, but I do. So running with friends keeps me accountable and motivated.

Another great piece of advice is just get up and go! That first step is the hardest. I can make so many excuses of why I can’t go for a run. In the end, every single time I go, I feel better. Even if it’s a crappy run, I’m still proud of myself.

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep on training. Never would I ever have imagined running 26.2 miles, but I did. And you can, too. You never know when you’ll see smiling faces picking you up from the airport for being a marathon finisher.

YES to the not comparing self... I catch myself doing it sometimes. That's the competitive side of me. But I'm also not BQ fast so there's no sense in comparing myself to some of my speedy runner friends!

I always say You are your own biggest critique. Not comparing yourself to others is so hard. That pic of your family meeting you is too cute!

I definitely agree with the importance of running your own race and realizing how MENTAL of a sport running is! I have been in my head way too many times and it has probably negatively impacted some of my races. I think running always keeps you guessing and there's always something to learn!
