This week is a Cruella de Vil and 101 Dalmatians Halloween costume theme and a Jasper bonus. This was one of my favorites, because it was mostly homemade. That’s why we’re looking a little hodgepodge. It always seems to find it’s way back to a Disney theme.
Cruella de Vil
I used a black dress I already owned, bought a Cruella wig and red opera length gloves. To add some dalmatian details, I went to the fabric store and bought dalmatian fabric and turned it into a shawl. I also got a cheap feather boa and added my black boots. The eyebrows and make-up sealed the deal for my Cruella de Vil look. It’s always fun to play a little evil.
One of Cruella’s henchman, my husband had the same body type, so it was a perfect fit. He had brown pants, I found a turtleneck at Goodwill, and he borrowed a jacket and hat from my father. Although all the colors didn’t necessarily go together, I think he pulled it off. And don’t forget to get into character. That always helps out your costume.
Baby Dalmatian was a store bought costume who kind of looked like a cow, but whatevs. The package said dalmatian.
The next youngest had dalmatian pajamas from The Gap, while everyone else wore black leggings and white long-sleeved shirts. We cut out spots from black felt and glued them on with fabric glue. The girls wanted some tutus. This was a last-minute costume. If I was more prepared I would have just purchased inexpensive tutus from Etsy or Amazon.
Instead, I cut strips of tulle and tied them around an elastic band and added some spots. If you enjoy being crafty, this might be something that’s fun for you. I like craftiness, but it was tedious. Next time, I’ll purchase.
To make the dog ear headbands, I purchased cheap, thick headbands from the Dollar Store and wrapped it with dalmation-like fabric from the fabric store. Then we made a dog ear pattern and just glued two pieces of dog-patterned ears together and glued it to the headband. Then I purchased thick red ribbon and attached velcro to make a quick, easy dog collar.
The finishing touch was the make up. We bought a Halloween make-up set, added a white eye and a black eye, a black nose, some whiskers, a tiny tongue, and a spot, and ta-da! A gaggle of dalmatians. Not quite 101, but you get the gist.
